The Swiss goverment has made it clear: Downloading movies and music is legal.

One in three people in Switzerland download unauthorized music, movies and games from the Internet and since last year the government has been wondering what to do about it. This week their response was published and it was crystal clear. Not only will downloading for personal use stay completely legal, but the copyright holders won’t suffer because of it, since people eventually spend the money saved on entertainment products.

In Switzerland, just as in dozens of other countries, the entertainment industries have been complaining about dramatic losses in revenue due to online piracy.

In a response, the Swiss government has been conducting a study into the impact downloading has on society, and this week their findings were presented.

The overall conclusion of the study is that the current copyright law, under which downloading copyrighted material for personal use is permitted, doesn’t have to change.

Their report begins with noting that when it comes to copying files, the Internet has proven a game-changer. While the photocopier, audio cassette tape and VCR allowed users to make good quality copies of various media, these devices lacked a in-built distribution method. The world-wide web changed all that.

Distribution method or not, the entertainment industries have opposed all these technological inventions out of fear that their businesses would be crushed. This is not the right response according to the Swiss government, which favors the option of putting technology to good use instead of taking the repressive approach.

“Every time a new media technology has been made available, it has always been ‘abused’. This is the price we pay for progress. Winners will be those who are able to use the new technology to their advantages and losers those who missed this development and continue to follow old business models,” the report notes.

The government report further concludes that even in the current situation where piracy is rampant, the entertainment industries are not necessarily losing money. To reach this conclusion, the researchers extrapolated the findings of a study conducted by the Dutch government last year, since the countries are considered to be similar in many aspects.

The report states that around a third of Swiss citizens over 15 years old download pirated music, movies and games from the Internet. However, these people don’t spend less money as a result because the budgets they reserve for entertainment are fairly constant. This means that downloading is mostly complementary.

The other side of piracy, based on the Dutch study, is that downloaders are reported to be more frequent visitors to concerts, and game downloaders actually bought more games than those who didn’t. And in the music industry, lesser-know bands profit most from the sampling effect of file-sharing.

The Swiss report then goes on to review several of the repressive anti-piracy laws and regulations that have been implemented in other countries recently, such as the three-strikes Hadopi law in France. According to the report 12 million was spent on Hadopi in France this year, a figure the Swiss deem too high.

The report further states that it is questionable whether a three-strikes law would be legal in the first place, as the UN’s Human Rights Council labeled Internet access a human right. The Council specifically argued that Hadopi is a disproportionate law that should be repealed.

Other measures such as filtering or blocking content and websites are also rejected, because these would hurt freedom of speech and violate privacy protection laws. The report notes that even if these measures were implemented, there would be several ways to circumvent them.

The overall suggestion the Swiss government communicates to the entertainment industries is that they should adapt to the change in consumer behavior, or die. They see absolutely no need to change the law because downloading has no proven negative impact on the production of national culture.

Aside from downloading, it is also practically impossible for companies in Switzerland to go after casual uploaders. In 2010 the Supreme Court ruled that tracking companies arenot allowed to log IP-addresses of file-sharers, making it impossible for rightsholders to gather evidence.

If your a dj and you have serato or traktor for that matter you will know that its not verry hard hooking it up but every now and then there are some irritating hickups while setting up your shit that can cost you allot of time. Especially in a dark loud place known as a club. Over the years i have ran into some problems when hooking up serato. Sometimes i tought how easy it would be just to play with cd’s but then i remember playing with Serato is much more fun, creative. + i don’t have to burn all those freaking cd’s!

I had many gigs where i have lost a little time and probably irritated the dj before me simply because of the order i did things in or just bad gear. For example: Mixers with broken channels that nobody tought to mention, turntables that are rewired incorrectly (Wich can be a real headscratcher if you encounter it for the first time and you see your records playing backwards)  and ofcourse just plain old human error.

Now some of these mechanical errors are always a risk so you can’t improve that. What you can improve is you and the way you do things. I don’t like to bother dj’s that play before me so today i tought how can bother them even more ?

No seriously i want to find a way to make this transition faster and faster. So i put some steps together that i think might shave off a couple of seconds. This isnt some magical formula or something and im not saying i know everything. i just felt it would help me and if it happens to help some others then great! thats why i put this online.

First of all you don’t need all those cables in the serato output.  At least if your not intending on switching between real vinyl and serato)  So if your not switching then throw those cables out and just use the 2 important ones.

Tape the Output cables 1 & 2 together then it becomes much easier to handle

Tag em like in Red is right White is left. I didnt have any red tape left so its not right yellow. When its dark you will have a much easier time seeing what the hell your doing.

1.Set-up your laptop firs. I like to place it rather far away from me and this way it doesnt realy bother the other dj,( you can always put it somewhere else later)

Also its not on the clock so you can do this a couple of minutes before you start or even earlier if you want.

2.Open the serato app on your computer then stick in the usb. This also does not bother the other dj and thus not on the clock.

(I left out my kontrol X1 but if you do have a controller hook that up first before anything else)

3. Now here is where the clock starts ticking. You are going to take over from the other dj soon so place your box behind the mixer. This is possibly going to interfere a bit with the other guy so try and do it fast. Also try and hold on to the cables your going to attach.

(These small things help you save time because your not going to look for the cables you just dropped)

4. Hook up the outputs nice and quick. In the dark its verry good to have these tags like the white tape i have on the left output. (A tiny flashlight because if you have to ask for it most of the time they don’t have it and its also more time lost)

5. Most clubs have Pioneer mixers these days. They have these little switches below the number 1 & 2  Most of the time they are on “Line”  You can hook your serato line outputs up to line or cd.

If you stick em in the line input and the switches are on phono you get this horrible distorted sound and im not talking about the switches on top of the mixer itself. don’t ask me the fysics about how this happens all i know is that it sounds like nazi music when its like that.  First time this happened to me my brain was flippin like a pinball machines i just couldn’t understand.

6.Quickly hook up the cables from the turntables itself.

7. Lay down your vinyl or stick in your plastic.  Put on your headphones and drop some tunes! preferably my tunes :p

Elke productie van hem, heb ik al menige malen door mijn kot laten galmen. Op Pukkelpop stond ik voor hem op de tweede rij. Een oude mix van hem, ‘The Year 4000′, staat nog altijd op mijn mp3-speler. Ik zal ongetwijfeld niet de enige zijn die door deze man betoverd is. Vele anderen stonden op Forma.T en Laundry Day speciaal voor hem uit de bol te gaan. Niet voor niets was Midnight Munchies er snel bij om zijn talenten in te huren.
